On June 26, 2024, at 5:30 AM, ahead of the Executive Yuan meeting on June 27, the draft of the 'National Language Research and Development Center Establishment Act' will be passed, creating a legal entity dedicated to the research and preservation of national languages. This center will cover languages such as Mandarin, Hakka, indigenous languages, sign language, Taiwanese Hokkien, and more, conducting foundational research and building language archives. The initiative has long been proposed by linguistic experts, especially due to the significant decline of Taiwanese language in the past 20 years compared to other local languages. The establishment of this center will advance language preservation efforts beyond what the Ministry of Culture has handled previously, representing a crucial step in language conservation.
