Taiwanese Official Admits Mistaken Identification of Chinese Migrant on Speedboat in Tamsui

Reported 10 months ago

On June 10, 2024, a Chinese migrant was spotted attempting to reach Taiwan on a speedboat at the Tamsui River mouth, with our coast guard only locking onto the boat after 6 nautical miles, revealing a breach in our maritime defense. Taiwan's Ocean Affairs Council Chairperson, Kuan Pi-ling, acknowledged the error in judgment and dereliction of duty by the surveillance team, emphasizing that the system functioned correctly, but human error was the issue. The migrant, a 60-year-old man named Ruan, had expressed anti-Chinese government views online and sought refuge in Taiwan for fear of political persecution. Kuan Pi-ling pledged to take disciplinary action against the staff responsible for the lapse in monitoring and highlighted the need for vigilant and experienced personnel at critical surveillance points in the future.
