On June 9th, a mainland Chinese man drove a speedboat straight into the Tamsui Ferry Pier, raising national security concerns due to a lapse in coast guard patrol. Former legislator Cai Zhengyuan disclosed on Facebook that high-ranking officials in the coast guard administration have allocated all budgets to building ships, prioritizing maritime patrol over coastal patrol, leading to a high turnover rate among radar operators. Additionally, equipment along the coast is outdated and insufficient, with funds mainly spent on shipbuilding. Cai pointed out discrepancies in ship-to-personnel ratios and equipment deployment, emphasizing the need for balanced resources and attention to both maritime and coastal defense.
