During a temple event in New Taipei City in 2020, a worshipper named Wu ignited a firework cascade leading to the ignition of nearby eco-friendly firecrackers, causing injuries to a bystander named Li. The New Taipei District Court ruled for Wu to compensate over 3.4 million NT dollars, with Li also pursuing criminal charges against Wu. Wu initially received a 4-month sentence for negligence causing severe injury, later increased to 6 months on appeal. The incident resulted in severe burns for Li, covering 32% of their body surface area, leading to both criminal and civil lawsuits. Wu claimed to have tried to assist Li but was ultimately held responsible for the mishap due to failure in safety checks and crowd control measures. The court acknowledged the considerable physical and emotional impact on Li, awarding a total compensation of 5 million NT dollars minus prior victim compensation, resulting in the 3.4 million NT dollar judgment against Wu, which can be appealed.
