On July 1, 2024, a tenant named Mr. Ma in Taipei revealed that his landlord increased the electricity fee to 8.46 yuan per kilowatt hour citing summer electricity rates, claiming it is not illegal based on Taipower's rate chart. However, the Chui Mama Foundation expressed that while setting the electricity fee at the maximum limit may not be illegal, the cost is clearly overcharged. The Ministry of the Interior's Consumer Protection Commission will implement a new version of the 'Residential Lease Agreement Template,' restricting landlords from charging electricity fees exceeding the 'average electricity price per period' or 'total electricity bill for the period.' This regulation aims to prevent landlords from overcharging tenants for electricity, with the new system expected to be effective in mid-July.
