Sedrick Zelitis Smith, a 47-year-old truck driver from Dallas, was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for collaborating with a human smuggling organization to transport migrants from Mexico into the United States. He facilitated the transportation of over 900 individuals from Laredo to San Antonio inside tractor-trailers. Homeland Security Investigations uncovered the operation in May 2021, with nine others indicted and one sentenced to prison. Authorities are determined to combat human trafficking rings exploiting people for profit.
