Thailand Passes Same-Sex Marriage Bill Becoming the First in Southeast Asia

Reported 8 months ago

Vision Thai reported on June 18, 2024, that the Thai House of Representatives passed a same-sex marriage equality bill, set to be officially promulgated and expected to be in effect in a few months. Once in effect, Thailand will become the first country in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. LGBTQ+ advocates welcomed the decision as a long-awaited victory. The bill allows any two individuals over 18 years old to register for marriage, granting them the same benefits and rights as opposite-sex couples. It changes the terminology for married couples from 'husband and wife' to 'spouses' and allows LGBTQ+ groups from around the world to register marriages in Thailand. After passing in the House of Representatives, the bill will be forwarded to the cabinet, then to the royal approval for announcement in the Royal Gazette, becoming effective within 120 days. LGBTQ+ groups welcomed the bill's passing, celebrating outside the parliament, and the Prime Minister, currently on Covid-19 leave, congratulated virtually.
