The concept of 'mental load' in parenting, referring to the unseen work of managing household and family, is often discussed negatively due to the stress and unseen efforts involved. However, new research suggests that there may be some positive impacts associated with carrying this load. The study identified three types of tasks contributing to the mental load - managerial, emotional, and cognitive, with findings showing that women spend more time on this invisible labor than men. Results indicated that the cognitive load was associated with greater family satisfaction and improved job performance, while the emotional load had negative impacts such as work-family conflict and exhaustion. Suggestions for managing the mental load include reframing it positively, seeking help, making it visible, and evaluating each task's impact on happiness and life satisfaction.
