It is advised not to wash bell peppers until ready to eat them, as moisture can cause them to spoil more quickly. If bell peppers start to show signs of aging, such as soft or wrinkly brown spots, they can still be used in cooked recipes or frozen for up to six months. Once bell peppers become slimy, smell off, or have black spots indicating mold, it's time to discard them.
