Modern savory meat zongzi originates from the Ming Dynasty while zongzi from ancient times was sweet. A pair of zongzi dating back 750 years from the Southern Song Dynasty were unearthed in Jiangxi's Artifact Museum, reaffirming the tradition of eating zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival. The filling of these zongzi remains a mystery as they are too delicate to open, preserved in a transparent box for viewing. Various historical accounts mention diverse zongzi fillings like fruit zongzi and sugar-coated zongzi made during the Song Dynasty, before the popularity of savory zongzi arose in the Ming Dynasty.
