On July 7, 2024, Tokyo held its gubernatorial election, with the incumbent governor Yuriko Koike securing victory for a third consecutive term. At 71 years old, Koike won with over 40% of the vote, a significant lead over the second-place candidate by more than 10 percentage points. This election saw a record-high of 56 candidates running, reflecting the assessment of Koike’s past two terms. Running as an independent candidate, Koike actually received support from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito coalition, which contributed to her high level of support and now leads into her third term.
