Tourist Season in Little Liuqiu Endangered by Land Crabs: 502 Crabs Killed in Two Weeks Turned into 'Crab Cakes'

Reported about 1 year ago

During the peak tourist season in Little Liuqiu from May to October, land crabs are at risk of being killed on the roads as they migrate to the sea to lay eggs. Over a period of two weeks from June 6 to 18, a total of 502 land crabs and hermit crabs were found crushed by vehicles across the island. Conservationists urge authorities to take concrete actions, similar to those in Kenting, to protect these crabs. With the increase in roadkill incidents, efforts are being made to educate tourists and drivers on slowing down to prevent further casualties and preserve the rich natural ecology of land crabs on the island.
