On June 24, 2024, a fire and explosion incident occurred at a lithium battery factory in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, resulting in 22 deaths, mostly Chinese nationals. The toxic smoke produced by the burning lithium batteries caused victims to lose consciousness after inhaling just one or two breaths, leaving no chance for escape. The fire led to continuous explosions due to the presence of 35,000 battery cells in the factory. The quick spread of the smoke left little time for evacuation, with victims including 2 South Koreans, 18 Chinese, 1 Lao, and 1 unidentified nationality. The Chinese embassy in South Korea confirmed the deaths of 19 Chinese citizens in the accident, emphasizing the desperate situation faced by those unable to escape the rapidly spreading fire.
