On June 10, 2024, Li Jing-tang was named by the Japanese government for falsifying data; Toyota Motor Chairman Akio Toyoda apologized. The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism issued a statement last week, accusing the country's 5 major car manufacturers, including Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha Motor, of submitting false or incorrect data during safety tests. This scandal has led to a significant drop in stock prices and market capitalization for Toyota and Mazda, with Toyota's market value evaporating approximately 2.45 trillion Japanese yen (about NT$506 billion) over a week and Mazda losing 803.3 billion yen (about NT$166 billion). The Ministry has halted the sale of several models by Toyota and Mazda, as investigations proceed to uncover any potential further wrongdoing among these and other companies included in the scandal.
