On June 21, 2024, at 8:10 PM, Taroko Express was hit by falling rocks in the Chongde and Horen section. The Executive Yuan activated an emergency medical team. The train stopped inside the Horen Tunnel, leaving passengers in darkness to disembark and walk. Premier Su Tseng-chang promptly had the Minister of Transportation, Li Meng-yen, assess the situation at the Taiwan Railways Operations Control Center and directed the Minister of Health and Welfare, Chiu Tai-yuan, to mobilize the emergency medical team. The injured were helped by a team from Hualien Hospital, with efforts to resume train services swiftly. The train had a total of 525 passengers, and arrangements were made to transport them back to stations. Investigations and repairs are ongoing.
