On June 28, 2024, in the first debate between President Biden and former President Trump, Trump lost despite verbally attacking Biden most of the time. The New York Times pointed out that Trump's rapid-fire style attacks often lacked substance, context, or were misleading. Nevertheless, Trump's camp continued to boast this as the greatest debate victory in history. Despite facing continuous insults and attacks, Biden was put on the defensive from the beginning of the debate, with Trump accusing him of incompetence and corruption. The debate setting allowed Trump to make a series of unchallenged misleading statements, with the moderators focused on maintaining order rather than fact-checking Trump's statements.
