The American newspaper 'The Washington Post' reported on July 5 that in order to meet the U.S. Marine Corps' needs in light attack and general aviation support, the Marine Corps reactivated the HMLA 269 on July 1, as the 269th Light Attack Helicopter Squadron, to handle various crisis response and rapid reaction missions. The squadron will operate AH-1Z and UH-1Y helicopters to provide air support and armed escort for Marine Corps expeditionary forces, particularly the 2nd MEF stationed at New River Marine Corps Air Station in North Carolina. The decision to reactivate the squadron came after a thorough evaluation and analysis by the Marine Corps, indicating the need for an additional attack helicopter squadron on the U.S. East Coast to support the 2nd MEF.
