UK retail sales have experienced a stronger-than-expected increase at the beginning of the year, primarily driven by consumers spending more on food to eat at home. January saw a 1.7% rise in goods sold, recovering part of the losses from the previous festive season. While food sales surged, overall retail performance remains mixed as consumer confidence continues to wane amidst concerns over job losses and rising living costs.
