Ukraine's Ministry of Defense Intelligence Agency (GUR) announced on June 9, 2024 that Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed a Russian Su-57 stealth fighter, marking the first instance globally. The attack, which took place at the Akhtubinsk airbase in Astrakhan Oblast, Russia, about 600 kilometers from the Ukraine-Russia border, was believed to be a long-range strike. While the specific unit responsible for this achievement was not disclosed, satellite images released by Ukraine's military showed the damaged Su-57 on the tarmac, making it a historic blow to the Russian air force. The Su-57, developed by Sukhoi for Russia and equipped with advanced capabilities, was put into service in 2020 but in limited numbers.
