The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department reports an ongoing whooping cough outbreak with 24 confirmed cases, the most in at least five years, ranging from a 2-year-old to someone in their 80s. Symptoms include intense coughing bouts leading to air expulsion and a 'whooping' noise, as well as blue discoloration during coughing, fever, nasal discharge, and more. Prevention involves staying up to date on the pertussis vaccine, Tdap booster shots for ages 11 and above, good hygiene practices, and seeking medical attention for prolonged coughing. Antibiotics can be used as post-exposure prophylaxis. Notable cases have been reported among high school and middle school students in Lexington.
