University Freshmen Numbers May Hit Record Low in 4 Years, 40 More Universities at Risk of Closure

Reported 7 months ago

As a result of declining birth rates, Datong Institute of Technology, Mindao University, and Global University are set to cease operations by July 31 this year. With the first-year student population in universities dropping to over 157,000 in the 117th academic year, concerns over tertiary enrollment in colleges and universities arise. Private universities like Datong Institute of Technology, Oriental University, Global University, and Mindao University face financial woes and are expected to close in July this year. It is speculated that around 40 universities may face closure, potentially leading to thousands of job losses for teaching staff. To address the declining birth rate, the Ministry of Education plans to provide resources, loosen regulations, and introduce interdisciplinary teaching and flexible semester adjustments among other measures to help schools survive the crisis.
