More than 170 US business groups supporting free trade have requested the Biden administration to extend the consultation period by 30 days on the plan to impose higher tariffs on imports from China, including electric vehicles, batteries, solar products, etc., with some tariffs expected to come into effect on August 1. The Americans for Free Trade alliance comprising 173 trade associations highlighted the need for public hearings similar to those held in 2017 and 2018 before additional tariffs on Chinese products. Meanwhile, the US Manufacturing Alliance led by the United Steelworkers and domestic manufacturers has called for higher trade barriers on Chinese imports, advocating the reinstatement of an expired trade protection law. Discussions on trade issues with China continue at the G7 summit in Italy.
