US-Japan Defense Procurement Talks Encourage Equipment Production Cooperation

The Japanese Ministry of Defense announced on June 10, 2024, that it has completed its first defense procurement negotiations with the United States, aiming to promote cooperation in defense equipment production and strengthen each other's military capabilities to deter potential threats in the region and even address the insufficient assistance to Ukraine. The US Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Alan R. Shaffer, held the first 'US-Japan Defense Industry Cooperation, Procurement, and Sustainment Regular Consultation' (DICAS) meeting with the Director-General of the Japanese Ministry of Defense's Bureau of Defense Equipment, Masataka Fukazawa, signing relevant agreements to enhance technical transfers, boost defense industries, and overcome challenges. The US also aims to deepen its understanding of Japanese companies' capabilities to pave the way for further cooperation and mitigate potential obstacles.
