The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed a lawsuit against Consensys, a blockchain software technology company, for failing to register as a broker for its MetaMask swaps service and for not registering the offer and sale of certain securities through its crypto staking programs. The SEC alleges that Consensys collected over $250 million in fees as an unregistered broker. Consensys operates the popular MetaMask crypto wallet and previously sued the SEC regarding Ether regulation, despite the SEC closing its investigation into the company.
