USDA Eliminates School Lunch Fees for Low-Income Families

Reported 20 days ago

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that starting in the 2027-2028 school year, students eligible for free or reduced-price school meals will no longer face processing fees associated with cashless payment systems. Currently, these fees can disproportionately burden low-income families, sometimes costing them up to 60 cents for every dollar spent. This change, aimed at reducing financial strain on families earning under 185% of the federal poverty level, is part of a broader goal to ensure equitable access to healthy meals for all children.
