On June 2, Mexico held its presidential election, with female President Claudia Sheinbaum winning overwhelmingly. However, the following day, the Mayor of Cotija in the west was killed, and on the 7th, another female councilor was assassinated at her home. This election has been termed the bloodiest in history with 39 public office candidates being killed. Drug cartels and local government corruption are speculated to be the main threats to candidates. Sheinbaum became Mexico's first female president, but the violence continued with the mayor being shot multiple times and killed, along with her bodyguard later dying as well. Esmeralda Garzon, head of the Equity and Gender Committee of the Tixtla City Council, was killed by armed men at her doorstep. Authorities are investigating, but the assailants remain at large.
