On July 3, 2024, a senior man at the Xitou Natural Education Park in Nantou set fire to joss paper on the trail, startling hikers. During the summer vacation, the park experienced a surge in visitors where one individual burned joss paper, causing panic among the hikers. Park authorities promptly put out the fire and warned the man not to repeat the offense, stating he would be banned from entry if he did. Witnesses saw the man setting up a makeshift stall beside the trail and starting the fire, claiming to be paying respects to the mountain deity. Although he was brought in for questioning, it was determined that he did not intend arson and was only burning joss paper for religious purposes.
