Walking into Life with a Rare Disease: A Rebirth Opportunity for Children

Reported about 1 year ago

On June 10, 2024, 6:43 pm, a Tzu Chi volunteer in Maumere, Indonesia, regularly visits and cares for households, particularly the children suffering from rare diseases who endure tremendous suffering from birth. In addition to providing medical and living assistance, the volunteers also encourage mothers to accompany and nurture their children to grow up healthy. Among the children is two-year-old Reina, diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia since birth, requiring partial pancreas removal, leaving a long scar on her stomach that evokes sympathy. Only 20 children in Indonesia have this disease, needing regular blood sugar tests and daily injections for nutrition, causing financial strain on families. Another child, Qiana, with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, has experienced challenges due to excessive growth since birth, but with Tzu Chi's assistance, she is now healthier and happier at three years old.
