Watch Your Waistline: The Surprising Caloric Differences Between North and South Zongzi Revealed by Nutritionist

Reported 11 months ago

As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, families are indulging in zongzi, but these traditional treats can be high in calories and easily lead to weight gain. According to a nutritionist, there are differences in zongzi caloric content between the north and south regions, with the north's meat zongzi containing around 500 kcal and the south's about 400 kcal. To avoid gaining weight, it's recommended to limit zongzi consumption to one per day, eaten before noon, and engage in physical activities in the afternoon to aid digestion. Eating zongzi in a specific order—vegetables, soup, sticky rice, and meat—accompanied by plenty of greens rich in dietary fiber can help with digestion. The nutritionist also suggests consuming tea with catechins or coffee with chlorogenic acid to help regulate metabolism and reduce sodium-induced bloating from the zongzi's high sodium content.
