Yellow Committee Chairs of Yunlin Involved in Bribery Scandal to Protect Green Energy Operators; Prosecutors Bring Back 21 Individuals in Search

Reported about 1 year ago

Last October, Kuomintang member Shen Zonglong, then the chairman of the Yunlin County Council, resigned due to his involvement in a green energy corruption case and was succeeded by independent councilor Huang Kai. However, just a few months later, Huang Kai was also implicated in a similar green energy case. Prosecutors from New Taipei District led by the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau descended to Yunlin, conducting searches at various locations including the county council, county government offices, and Huang's residence, bringing back Huang, county government construction director Li Junxing, two construction office staff, and multiple green energy businessmen for questioning, totaling 21 individuals. Investigations revealed that Huang Kai allegedly received bribes from solar energy operators amounting to millions of dollars and abused his authority as chairman to assist these operators, prompting further investigation. Following overnight interrogation by prosecutors, Huang Kai was detained and denied visitation rights by the New Taipei District Court. Besides Huang Kai's detention, Li Junxing and two businessmen surnamed Wang and Huang were released on bail of 200,000 each, while a businessman surnamed Zhou was granted bail of 100,000, and another businessman surnamed Lian was placed under house arrest. Other individuals were questioned and then released. Yunlin County Governor Chang Li-shan, currently in Japan for a visit, expressed through a county spokesperson her respect for the investigative authority of the prosecutors, acknowledging that the case is under investigation and refraining from further comments. She has instructed relevant departments to fully cooperate with the judicial investigation and hopes that the prosecutors can quickly uncover the truth to restore Yunlin's reputation. This scandal, happening in less than a year, involving two consecutive chairmen of the Yunlin County Council in green energy corruption cases, has shocked the public. Prosecutors will continue to dig deep to clarify the involvement of Huang Kai and others in the case, as well as whether there are other officials or businessmen involved. Once confirmed true, they will be dealt with according to the law without leniency.
