Former mayor of Taoyuan and chairman of Straits Exchange Foundation, Zheng Wencan, was arrested for corruption on the morning of July 5 and was interrogated overnight before the prosecution applied for his detention and restriction. Coincidentally, on the same day, Democratic Progressive Party legislator Chen Tingfei was expelled from the party for not following the party's lineup in the Central Committee election. Former Blue Party legislator Chen Hsueh-Sheng analyzed that these consecutive events were likely orchestrated by President Lai Ching-te in order to assert his authority within the party by taking action against key figures from different factions. Chen believes that Lai Ching-te's next step will be to crack down on corruption in order to boost his public image and strengthen his administration, as his governance has been criticized for being weak, especially regarding cross-strait relations.
