The Chinese Coast Guard vessel has clashed repeatedly with Filipino fishing boats in the South China Sea region. The Philippines also submitted an application to the UN on June 15th to determine the external boundaries of its continental shelf up to 350 nautical miles from the west of Palawan Island, the maximum range allowed by UNCLOS.
