The median CEO compensation in the S&P 500 soared nearly 13% in 2023 to $16.3 million, outpacing the 4.1% increase in wages and benefits of private-sector employees. According to an Associated Press survey, half the CEOs at S&P 500 companies made at least 196 times more than the median employee. The disparity continues to grow, with CEOs once earning about 40 to 50 times more than workers post-World War II, sparking calls for greater scrutiny and reform in executive pay practices.
