To sanction Taiwan independence activists, China's Taiwan Affairs Office, together with the Supreme People's Court, Supreme People's Procuratorate, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of State Security, and Ministry of Justice, released a set of 22 new rules for convicting and sentencing 'separatist crimes' on June 21, 2024. The most severe punishment under these new rules is the death penalty for cases of severely egregious 'separatist crimes,' with those involved facing lifelong accountability. The crackdown is in response to what China perceives as severe threats to national sovereignty and security posed by pro-independence activities.
