China Promotes Urbanization with Rural Population Moving to Cities: CNN Reports Beijing Suburbs Turning into 'Ghost Villages'

Reported about 1 year ago

Since the economic reforms in the 1980s, China has been encouraging the rural population to move to urban areas, and for the past decade has been promoting the 'New Type of Urbanization' policy. However, the economic rise of third and fourth-tier cities has led to the disappearance of many rural areas. CNN visited the suburbs of Beijing, describing them as 'ghost villages' with abandoned buildings and overgrown vegetation. This shift has resulted in a significant increase in urban population but has also caused challenges like young people moving to cities for better opportunities, leaving behind parents and children in rural areas. Chinese data shows a remarkable growth in urbanization from 10.6% at the founding of the country to 66.2% by the end of 2023, driving internal demand and attracting investments from international brands like Hai Di Lao, KFC, and Starbucks in lower-tier cities.
