On June 30, 2024, Mayor Ko Wen-je of the People First Party visited Taoyuan, Taiwan, and spoke about the closure of Nuclear Reactor 1 at Nuclear Power Plant 3 in July. He emphasized the necessity to approach the issue from a scientific perspective and expressed concerns about the potential power outage in July and August if nuclear power is shut down abruptly. Taipower stated that the addition of new generating units this year will surpass the decommissioned units, ensuring no electricity shortage in summer. Mayor Ko suggested extending the operations of Nuclear Power Plant 2 and 3 before considering alternatives like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) or nuclear fusion, as Taiwan's renewable energy development has faced challenges.
