Dental Basic Care for Patients with Dry Mouth

Reported about 1 year ago

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, Taiwan's population aged 65 and older reached 14.05% by the end of March 2018, marking the entrance into an 'aging society.' Changes in population structure necessitate a shift from traditional 'curative treatment' to 'supportive care' in oral health, focusing on restoring oral function in elderly patients. Various causes of dry mouth in older adults seeking dental care were identified by Dr. Hsu Ling-hsin at Taipei City Hospital and Pingtung Hospital, including aging, poorly controlled diabetes, autoimmune diseases, bacterial infections, salivary stones, radiation therapy, medication side effects, and lifestyle factors. Symptoms caused by dry mouth can decrease quality of life.
