Feeling Exhausted in the Summer Heat? Drinking Coffee to Stay Awake? TCM Warns Against Overreliance

Reported 12 months ago

The scorching summer often leaves people feeling weak and tired, even with sufficient sleep. Many turn to coffee to stay alert but may end up relying too much on it, causing dependency and lack of focus without it. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner Guo Dawei recommends moderate coffee consumption for reinforcing yang energy, aiding digestion, and relieving stress. However, excessive coffee intake can lead to excitability, nervousness, emotional instability, dehydration due to its diuretic effect, and increased fatigue, especially during sweaty summers. Guo further suggests using herbal elements like ginseng and maca to replenish energy and lift spirits, rather than relying solely on coffee. It's advised to consume less than 300mg of caffeine daily to avoid restlessness, anxiety, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Herrbal plants like ginseng, maca, bananas, and blueberries are suggested alternatives to coffee, providing sustained energy and various health benefits. Guo emphasizes that herbal energy replenishment differs from caffeine by regulating physiological functions internally and aiding in energy storage, recommending it as a part of daily maintenance.
