Former President Ma Ying-jeou Accused of Misleading Foreign Media by Using Wordplay, According to Lai Ching-te

Reported about 1 year ago

Former President Ma Ying-jeou was mentioned by President Lai Ching-te in an interview with Time magazine, stating that the notion of 'mutual non-subordination' between both sides of the strait was previously mentioned during Ma's presidency as well. Ma's foundation executive, Xiao Xucen, criticized Lai for his 'new two-state theory' and accused him of using word games to deceive foreign media who do not understand Chinese. Xiao emphasized the difference between Lai's theory and Ma's adherence to the '1992 Consensus,' stating that Lai's discourse aimed at portraying a 'two-state' scenario, which contrasts with Ma's 'one China, different interpretations' approach. Xiao called on Lai to reaffirm the Cross-Strait Relations Act and declare that the two sides are not separate countries based on the ROC constitution for true peace and dignity in cross-strait relations.
