Foxconn's iPhone assembly plant in India faced criticism for refusing to hire married women, leading to demands for a government investigation by India's largest opposition party, the Congress. The ruling party's BJP women's organization also called for a probe. The controversy has sparked concerns about discrimination and lack of facilities for female employees, with the National Commission for Women in India asserting its right to investigate such matters. Foxconn's rationale of higher absenteeism among married women due to family responsibilities was refuted by the company, stating no discrimination occurred during the hiring process. Nevertheless, the Tamil Nadu state government in India has been urged to investigate the issue further.
