With backing from tech giants like Nvidia and Google, the number of AI unicorn companies globally valued at over $1 billion has surged by 85% to 37 within a year ending April, reflecting a shift in funding from industries like electric vehicles to AI. Notably, the 17 new unicorn companies include ventures from overseas, such as Mistral AI founded by former Google and Meta employees in France, and Cohere founded by University of Toronto alumni in Canada. Additionally, five AI unicorns are from mainland China. Major tech players like NVIDIA and Alphabet have been investing in these startups, while Microsoft's recruitment of talent from Inflection AI raised regulatory concerns in the UK and US.
