Reported 11 months ago

In international news on June 25, 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for two senior Russian officials on war crime charges. The individuals wanted are Sergei Shoigu, former Russian Defense Minister and current Secretary of the Russian Security Council, and Valery Gerasimov, the current Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. The ICC accuses Shoigu and Gerasimov of committing war crimes by ordering direct attacks on civilian targets and causing excessive harm to civilians or damage to civilian objects, as well as crimes against humanity. The court's decision marked an escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with Ukraine welcoming the ICC's decision while Russia dismissed the arrest warrants as invalid. This move by the ICC increases the number of Russian officials being sought to at least four, adding to the tensions between the two nations.
