As of June 2, there have been 977 cases of A Streptococcus infection in Japan, leading to a 'toxic shock syndrome,' which is 2.8 times higher than the same period last year and a 25-year high. Experts advise that the A Streptococcus, commonly known as the 'man-eating bacteria,' mainly spreads through droplets and contact. Travelers to Japan are urged to wear masks, wash hands regularly, and be cautious due to the possibility of a new strain emerging. While maintaining good hygiene practices can help prevent infection, the rising cases in Japan raise concerns about potential outbreaks in Taiwan. Infected individuals have experienced toxic shock syndrome, with a high mortality rate of 3 to 5%, emphasizing the need for vigilance, especially among vulnerable populations such as children, elderly, and diabetics.
