President Tsai Ing-wen announced the establishment of the 'National Climate Change Strategy Committee' with pro-nuclear Tung Ho-chin, the chairman of Wistron, as the deputy convener, sparking discussions on whether the government will adopt nuclear energy to address carbon reduction issues. Former President Ma Ying-jeou reminded that reducing carbon emissions is a global trend, and being pro-nuclear is not anti-trend but in line with the mainstream. He urged Tsai Ing-wen to address Taiwan's energy shortage crisis honestly for national security and a summer without power outages. Ma pointed out that after the EU recognized nuclear energy as green energy in 2022, more countries worldwide, including the US, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, have actively shown support for nuclear energy. He also shared an encounter with the US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz in 2013, where Moniz emphasized that coal, not nuclear energy, is the enemy in terms of energy development.
