Microsoft Facing Potential Hefty Fine from EU

Reported 8 months ago

The European Union antitrust regulators have accused Microsoft of bundling its video conferencing software Teams with products like Office 365 and Microsoft 365, violating fair competition rules and risking substantial fines. Despite Microsoft's efforts to address concerns by changing its sales approach last year, the EU remains wary of unfair competition practices. If found guilty of antitrust violations, Microsoft could face fines as high as 10% of its global annual revenue. Microsoft has the opportunity to appeal and propose stronger solutions to avoid these hefty fines. The EU initiated a formal investigation against Microsoft last year for bundling Teams with other software, triggered by a complaint from Slack's parent company Salesforce. Teams, integrated with Office 365 in 2017, quickly gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its video conferencing features.
