A 24-year-old soldier, surnamed Ou, from the Navy Min Jiang Ship in Keelung, Taiwan, escaped by jumping into the sea as he seemed to have trouble adjusting to life on the ship. He swam to Peace Island and sought help from a shipbuilding company's security. Police arrived, rescued Ou, who had no major injuries, and sent him to the hospital. His motive for jumping remains under investigation. Ou expressed his desire not to serve in the military, prompting further inquiries into the incident by Navy personnel and the Keelung Military Police.
