A new strain of mpox is causing alarm in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with increased human-to-human transmission and a higher risk level. This mutated clade I virus emerged in September 2023 and appears to be more easily spread among humans compared to the previous strain. Despite being highly transmissible, the new strain does not cause more severe illness. Efforts are being made to contain the outbreak in Congo, but there is a concern about potential spread to neighboring countries.
