On July 6, 2024, in Barcelona, Spain, some protesters took to the streets to demonstrate against over-tourism, with around 3,000 participants voicing their frustrations. The demonstrators sprayed water guns at tourists and displayed banners with messages like 'Enough' and 'Tourists Go Home.' The rise in rent prices, attributed to landlords preferring short-term rentals for tourists, has caused dissatisfaction among local residents. Measures such as gradually phasing out short-term rentals by 2028 and implementing a daily accommodation tax of 4 euros per tourist from October have been proposed by the Barcelona city council in response to the situation.
