Researchers studying elephants have found that sometimes when one elephant emits a call, another group of the same species responds, while other times only one individual in the group responds. By analyzing sounds from over 100 elephants in Kenya, using machine-learning models to identify name-like elements in their calls, researchers conducted experiments where elephants responded more energetically to calls seemingly addressed to them. The study, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, suggests that elephants may 'call each other in a way similar to names,' revealing intricate communication patterns in these intelligent creatures.
