Taiwan Government to Establish 'Billion Cancer Drug Fund'

Reported about 1 year ago

During a legislative session, Taiwan's Premier Su Tseng-chang and Health Minister Chen Shih-chung revealed plans to gradually allocate budget within the national health insurance system over the next three years to establish a 'Billion Cancer Drug Fund.' The fund aims to provide temporary payment for cancer drugs and seek financial resources. When asked about considering tobacco, sugar, and alcohol taxes as potential funding sources, it was mentioned that tobacco taxation is already sufficient, and sugar and alcohol taxes should be excluded. The establishment of the fund is part of a campaign promise by President Tsai Ing-wen, with plans to reach a budget of NT$10 billion by 2024. The government is considering excluding sugar and alcohol taxes from funding sources and may seek private sector cooperation or donations instead.
